The Temp Life: Patrick
Welcome to The Temp Life, a regular series where we chat with current and former temps about the whats, whys, and hows of temporary work. This week we spoke to Patrick; a 28 year-old actor who uses temp work to fill in the gaps between auditions and filming.
Previous Temp Roles:
Variety of administrative positions; from reception, to team secretary, to post room.
Why did you become a temp?
As an actor it is always a challenge to find work that is flexible enough to run alongside the variety of theatre and TV auditions and jobs that can crop up at any time (or not at all). Temping is the perfect way to create job stability on your own terms.
How has temping aided your career progression?
I have temped in many different work environments, and the ability to adapt quickly to new places and people is a invaluable skill in the acting world. Also, as mentioned above, temping has provided me with a financial backbone in the acting industry, where jobs are often short-term and unpredictable.
What are the best things about temporary work?
The most wonderful aspect are the people. You are constantly diving into different industries and working as part of changing teams and projects. I have made many great friends over the years, and have built contacts in industries I would otherwise have no experience in or connection to.
