The Temp Life: James
Updated: Sep 4, 2018
Welcome to The Temp Life, a regular series where we chat with current and former temps about the whats, whys, and hows of temporary work. This week we spoke to James; a 27 year-old salesforce consultant, who used temporary work to help him build experience and contacts in the financial sector.
Profession: Salesforce Consultant
Previous Temp Roles:
Data Handling for a global bank (4 months, full-time temporary position)
Why did you become a temp?
After graduating university, I knew that I wanted to move to London and pursue a career as a consultant, but I still needed to build more experience in this industry and gain further qualifications. A friend recommended I join a temping agency, and only a few days after interviewing with them, they had placed me in the finance department of a global bank.
How has temping aided your career progression?
First and foremost, temping enabled me to get a job quickly and start earning a decent wage so that I was able to support myself financially in London. I was able to build experience and contacts within the financial sector, which have served me well when transitioning into my current career. Moreover, the temp role allowed me the flexibility of taking time off for interviews, and for further study, as and when needed.
What are the best things about temporary work?
I really enjoyed the challenge of throwing myself into a position and industry I hadn’t previously worked in, and having to adapt quickly. I feel this has strengthened me as consultant contractor — where my contracts typically last around 6 months — as I am more confident and knowledgeable of the challenges of constantly moving between companies. Temp work pushes you to step out of your comfort zone and adapt to an ever-changing work life. This not only keeps you on your toes, but is an invaluable skill in whatever career you choose to pursue.
