The Temp Life: Amy
Welcome to The Temp Life, a regular series where we chat with current and former temps about the whats, whys, and hows of temporary work. This week we spoke to Amy; a 25 year-old designer who found that temping was the ideal work to fit around studying and internships.
Profession: Designer (Interior & Graphic)
Previous Temp Roles:
Mostly reception cover. I tend to work between three regular companies: a property consultancy, a music label, and a private wealth management firm.
Why did you become a temp?
I wanted to retrain in design, and needed work I could fit in around study. Reception jobs are perfect for this, as I can schedule my week so that I focus on my degree related projects on the days I have classes, and use the other days to temp. Initially I was working in hospitality, but the hours were long and unsociable, and I was earning almost half as much.
How has temping aided your career progression?
Most importantly, it has enabled me to re-enter higher education in order to gain the qualifications I need to pursue my chosen career path. However, while this was the reason I started temping, I have also found that temp work has greatly improved my confidence, and made my me far more comfortable with new surroundings and situations.
What are the best things about temporary work?
Flexibility is probably the top one for me; however, the variety of temp work I have undertaken has broadened my CV immensely, and I am able to demonstrate a much wider range of work experience and skill sets when applying for design positions.
